Plague Doctor Mug — Beaked Mask Folk Horror Gift for Gothic History Lovers
The beaked mask is the enduring face of plague — though it belongs less to the medieval Black Death than to the outbreaks of the 1600s. The costume is credited to the French physician Charles de Lorme around 1619: a waxed leather coat, gloves and wide-brimmed hat, and that long curved beak packed with dried flowers, herbs and spices, meant to filter the “bad air” then blamed for the pestilence.
He carried a cane to examine the sick without laying a hand on them. This one is drawn as an antique woodcut — the masked doctor in a moonlit medieval street, a red cross marking a plague house behind him and a rat slipping across the cobbles — worked in midnight blue, black and old gold beneath the title THE PLAGUE DOCTOR.
A Halloween mug steeped in real macabre history — well suited to history readers, folk-horror and gothic types, dark academia tastes, and anyone who likes their coffee with a shiver.
