They say a great black dog still runs the coast roads of East Anglia. Black Shuck — a name older than English itself — is said to appear on storm nights with eyes like burning coals, and to meet his gaze was to be marked for the grave.

His most infamous night was the 4th of August 1577, when a black hound was said to burst through the doors of Bungay church during a violent thunderstorm, killing two parishioners at prayer, before striking again the same day at Blythburgh — where scorch marks on the door are still shown to visitors today.

This one is drawn as an antique woodcut: the hound charging down a gothic aisle as onlookers recoil, worked in warm sepia and fine engraving lines like an old folktale broadsheet.

A Halloween mug rooted in real English folklore — well suited to ghost-story readers, folklore collectors, gothic and dark academia types, and anyone who likes a good legend with their morning coffee.
